Why the Okai EB100 might be the best sharing e-bike for your fleet

Why the Okai EB100 might be the best sharing e-bike for your fleet

The last-mile problem is a public transportation dilemma regarding the difficulty of moving passengers from private residences to mass-transit centers i.e. bus stops, train stations, etc. The spatial inefficiency associated with city streets forces commuters to use personal transportation for short distances between their transit stop and home. The last mile problem reduces the positive benefits of public transportation i.e. reduced carbon emissions, reduced traffic congestion and increased convenience. The last mile problem has existed since public transport was invented but the term “last mile” solution only became a buzz word within the past 10 years.

Even with the launch of Scoot Networks moped in 2012 or Citi Bike’s docking stations in 2013, the micromobility revolution didn’t really take off until 2017 when the first dockless e-scooters were introduced to the streets of Santa Monica. The shared micromobility market is predicted to be worth between $300B – $500B by 2030. Worldwide, investors have already poured more than $5.7B into micromobility startups since 2015.
Now that we are three years and dozens of new free floating fleet startups later there is a key factor that is increasing ridership and advancing some sharing providers position in the marketplace. That is the investment into multimodal business models.

The reason for this is that all vehicles have slightly different use cases and therefore end consumers. E-scooters are used for shorter distances, e-bikes are great for longer and faster commutes, and e-mopeds allow for a comfortable longer distance commute. It makes the most sense from the operators perspective for the rider to jump from one modality to the other from the same application and it makes the most sense for the rider to be able to access all riding modes with just one app.

Electric bikes in general have improved a lot over the years. Historically the main problem with sharing e-bikes was that they were either way too expensive to produce or too flimsy on the road. This meant operators had to spend more money on maintenance costs, which drove down unit economics and turned less of a profit. The lack of good options reduced competition in the market and prevented new e-bikes from hitting the road.

The winning trifecta is a sharing e-bike that performs like the expensive consumer models, reduces unit economics and can be purchased at a price point that most sharing operators can afford.
